CHL Comes Down Hard on Rayz

Corpus Christi, Texas: December 2, 2003 – The Central Hockey League strictly came down on the Corpus Christi Rayz Tuesday afternoon. The Rayz had two key players suspended and three members of the team fined for incidents last week, Rayz General Manger/Senior Vice President Pat Dunn announced. The two suspended players are Rayz captain Ken Richardson and the team leading scorer Brad Wingfield.

Wingfield, who leads the CHL in penalty minutes with 140, received a six game suspension for an abuse of official penalty he received early in the first period Saturday night against the Austin Ice Bats. Earlier this season Wingfield was given a one game suspension for the same penalty. The next game Wingfield is eligible for is December 19th at Laredo to take on the Bucks. After Ed McGrane was called up to Houston Monday morning, Wingfield now reigns as the team's leading scorer with five goals, 12 assists and 17 points on the season. In addition to the suspension, Wingfield was fined an undisclosed amount.

Richardson is in his second year as captain of the Rayz. He received a three game suspension from the league for his hit on Fort Worth Brahmas captain, Chad Grills. Richardson checked Grills in the second period of the Rayz 4-3 win over Fort Worth on Wednesday, November 26th. He was assessed a five minute major for charging and a game misconduct penalty. He will miss the next three games and is eligible for return on December 13th against Laredo.

Two other members of the Rayz who were not suspended, however fined were defenseman Mike Tilson and interim Head Coach Pat Dunn. Both men were fined for incidents following a 2-1 overtime loss in Amarillo on Friday, November 28th. According to CHL Supervisor of Officials, Wayne Bonney, Tilson was fined for "shooting a banana." After the Amarillo Gorillas score a goal, their fans customarily throw fake bananas on the ice. The Rays defenseman allegedly shot one of these bananas earning him a fine. Dunn was fined for his actions immediately following the game in the arena. Neither man will miss any games and the terms of both fines were undisclosed.

The Rayz next game is Friday December 5th against the Expansion Colorado Eagles. Tickets are still available by calling (361) 814-PUCK. Fans can catch some Rayz in the middle of the week, however with the Corpus Christi Rayz Toys for Tots drive Wednesday December 3rd from 2:30-4:30pm at the Toys R Us on Airline, one block down from SPID. Players will be collecting toys for youngsters and signing autographs. Anyone who donates will receive $5 off a Rayz ticket.
