Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - Austrian forward Dominic Zwerger didn't waste much time in his return to the lineup for Spokane on Wednesday night, scoring his 5th career goal just 4:19 into the 2nd Period to help the Chiefs defeat the Everett Silvertips 5-3.
Zwerger poked the puck away from Everett's defenseman in the neutral zone and rushed down the ice for his unassisted breakaway goal to put the Chiefs up 3-0. Zwerger had missed 13 games since suffering an upper body injury against Lethbridge on November 8.
Mitch Holmberg got on the board first, scoring his 34th goal of the season. Holmberg also collected an assist on a Mike Aviani goal in the third period before the right wing himself added one more empty-netter for good measure. Aviani's goal was his second goal in the month of December, his 24th of the year.
The 'Tips narrowed the Spokane lead to one by the 2nd Intermission, using deflection goals by Jujhar Khaira and Carson Stadnyk late in the period, and tied the game with 11:41 remaining in the 3rd on a Tyler Sandhu wrister. Everett earned the only three power plays of the game through two periods, with the Stadnyk goal coming with the man advantage. Spokane didn't see a power play until the 14:43 mark in the 3rd Period and they capitalized.
Mike Aviani punched in a rebound from under Everett goaltender Austin Lotz's pad for the game-winner at the 16:12 mark of the 3rd Period. It was Aviani's 14th power play goal of the season. Holmberg added his 2nd goal of the night on an empty net to cap the scoring.
The win extends Spokane's home winning streak over Everett to 16 games dating back to February, 2010.
Spokane hosts Prince George this Saturday, December 14th, for the popular annual Teddy Bear Toss Game. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. and fans are encouraged to bring new or lightly used teddy bears to throw on the ice when the Chiefs score their first goal.
Tickets for Saturday night and all Chiefs home games are available in-person at the Chiefs' Ticket Office, over the phone at (509) 535-PUCK, via TicketsWest outlets and online at www.ticketswest.com.
