Comeback Effort Not Enough in Spokane

Everett Silvertips News Release

SPOKANE - The Everett Silvertips erased a three-goal deficit to tie the Spokane Chiefs in the third period before eventually falling by a 5-3 final score Wednesday night at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. The loss keeps the 'Tips winless in three games against the Chiefs this season with the teams set to meet again on Sunday after Everett's home-and-home set with the Vancouver Giants.

Down 3-0 early in the second period, Jujhar Khaira, Carson Stadnyk and Tyler Sandhu scored goals to help bring the Silvertips back even before the midpoint of the third period. Mike Aviani's powerplay score with less than four minutes remaining gave the Chiefs their winning margin. Josh Winquist and Mirco Mueller each drew two assists for Everett offensively.

The Silvertips started the game well and outshot Spokane 10-8 in the first period, but found themselves down by a pair after one thanks to two late goals. WHL leading scorer Mitch Holmberg started things off for the Chiefs at 15:55, netting his 34th goal of the year on a shot from the left circle. Spokane stretched the lead two minutes later as a Jeremy McIntosh slapshot from the point caromed off a skate in front and through Austin Lotz' five-hole.

Spokane made it a 3-0 lead at 4:19 of the second period after the puck hopped over Kevin Davis' stick at the offensive blueline, allowing Dominic Zwerger to skate in and score on a backhand shot from close range. Everett answered right off a faceoff less than one minute later however, as Noah Juulsen's blast from the point was tipped in by Josh Winquist to get the Silvertips on the board. The 'Tips then drew within one on their third powerplay with just nine seconds left in the stanza, with Carson Stadnyk tipping in a shot by Mirco Mueller to make it a 3-2 game going into the third.

Everett kept the momentum going early in the period and then tied the score on a 2-on-1 rush, with Winquist feeding Sandhu for a perfect shot into the top corner at 8:19. Tied at three in the later stages of the third, Spokane's lone powerplay of the night led to the game-winner. Just after Kohl Bauml was stopped on a shorthanded breakaway by goaltender Eric Williams, Mike Aviani followed an initial shot by Holmberg to the net and poked the puck in under Lotz with 3:48 remaining. Holmberg then ended the Silvertips' thoughts of tying it again with an empty-net goal to complete the scoring.

Austin Lotz (16-6-1-0) stopped 17 shots in defeat, while Eric Williams (16-8-0-1) made a number of key saves among his 34 on his way to the win. Final shots were 37-22 in Everett's favor, with the 'Tips scoring on one of four powerplay chances.

Next up for the Silvertips is a three-in-three weekend starting with a visit to Vancouver Friday night at 7:30 pm. The 'Tips then return to Comcast Arena for their last two home games before the WHL's holiday break, hosting the Giants Saturday at 7:05 pm and the Chiefs Sunday afternoon at 4:05 pm in the finale of our Christmas House Holiday Drive.
