Brockton Rox News Release
Worcester, Mass. - Worcester starter Zach Zuercher was fantastic, twirling a complete-game one-hitter as the Tornadoes shut out the Brockton Rox, 6-0, in a Can-Am League tilt at Hanover Insurance Park on Saturday evening.
The Tornadoes (18-20 second half, 37-48 overall) scored a pair of runs in the second, on back-to-back solo shots to lead off the inning by C Alex Trezza and CF Danny Santiesteban. Worcester then tacked on another run in the third inning, taking advantage of three consecutive two-out singles by SS Mark Minicozzi, 1B Nick Salotti, and Trezza.
In the sixth, the Tornadoes made it a 5-0 game with another pair of solo home runs off of Brockton starter Nick Tyson, this time off the bats of Santiesteban and DH Craig Maddox. The final Worcester run came the following inning, with 2B Boomer Blanchard stroking a one-out single, moving to third on Minicozzi's single, and scoring on Salotti's groundout to short.
Zuercher (6-2) fanned 14 Rox hitters, tying a Can-Am League single-game record, with the lone Brockton (23-15, 50-35) hit coming in the second, on 1B Melvin Falu's leadoff double.
Tyson (0-1) gave up five runs on eight hits in six innings of work, fanning five in his first appearance for the Rox. Previously, the Blackwood, N.J., native pitched for Lincoln and Shreveport of the American Association this season, and spent parts of four seasons in the Milwaukee Brewers' organization before that.
Minicozzi, Santiesteban and Trezza each had two hits to lead the Worcester offense.
The two teams meet in the fourth and final game of the series on Sunday at 5:05 p.m., with Mike Wlodarczyk (10-3) throwing for the Rox.
