Z's drop series opener against River Cats 7-5

The Sacramento River Cats scored twice to break an eighth inning tie, en route to a 7-5 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Saturday night.

Anthony Recker's bases-loaded infield single plated the go-ahead run, and Corey Wimberly added an RBI single to give Sacramento the winning margin.

Z's starter Brad Stone allowed five runs, four earned, while scattering seven hits over four innings.

In relief in the seventh and eighth innings, Hunter Jones charted the loss for New Orleans in 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on three walks while striking out three.

Fellow relievers Brett Sinkbeil, Tayler Tankersley and Tim Wood combined for 3 2/3 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five.

Donnie Murphy hit a three-run homer in the first inning, his fifth in the last 11 games. It gave the Zephyrs a 3-1 lead, but Sacramento responded with four runs in the fourth to jump ahead.

An RBI single by Brad Davis in the sixth and an RBI double by Hector Luna in the seventh brought the Zephyrs even with Sacramento at 5-5.

For the River Cats, Wimberly, Eric Sogard and Steve Tolleson each contributed two-hit efforts.

Sacramento catcher Kurt Suzuki went 1-for-3 with a two-run double in the fourth in his final rehab stint before returning to the Oakland A's.

The Z's and River Cats resume play Sunday afternoon from Zephyr Field at 2:00 p.m. as righties Rich VandenHurk (2-2, 5.01) and Graham Godfrey (1-2, 4.84) square off.
