Lancaster Stormers News Release
Right-hander Bob Zimmermann, recently acquired in a trade with the York Revolution, retired the first 17 batters he faced on Thursday evening, 10 on strikes, pitching the Newark Bears to a 6-1 win over the Lancaster Barnstormers in front of 4,694 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The loss dropped the Barnstormers one-half game behind the streaking Revolution, who have won eight in a row, in the Freedom Division. It was the first win for the Bears in their last eight meetings with Lancaster.
Zimmermann (1-1, 8-2) had his bid for Atlantic League history ended abruptly as Adam Witter nailed a solo homer to right with two outs in the sixth. Lancaster managed only two other baserunners in the game - Aaron Herr poked a two-out single to left off Zimmermann in the seventh, and Witter drew a leadoff walk from Armando Benitez in the ninth.
Newark put a run on the board in the first inning. Kennard Jones lined a single to left center off Rick Bauer (0-2, 3-11), stole second and took third as Witter's throw deflected into shallow left. Pablo Ozuna followed with a ground ball for the 1-0 lead. Two walks around a ground rule double by Daryle Ward loaded the bases with just one out, but Bauer got newcomer Eric Munson to ground into a force at the plate and retired James Cooper on a slow chopper to second for the final out.
Bauer settled down over the next three innings but found trouble in the fourth. With one out, Jones lofted a routine fly ball to left. Woods lost his footing, tried to recover and ended up dropping the ball for a two-base error. Jones swiped third, the second of his record setting four swipes on the night and scored when Ozuna dropped a double down the right field line. Brian Barton flied to right for the second out but Ward blasted a pitch out of the yard for his seventh homer off Lancaster pitching this season, giving the Bears a 4-0 lead.
Newark plated its final two runs in the seventh off John Koronka, who was making his debut performance for Lancaster. Jones bunted up the first base line and made it safely when Witter's hard throw handcuffed Vic Gutierrez and pulled him off the bag. Jones again stole second. Ozuna and Barton followed with walks to load the bases, and Ward delivered Jones with a sacrifice fly to right. Carl Everett brought home the final run with a single to left.
The Barnstormers stay at home to host the Long Island Ducks on Friday evening at 7:00. Josh Hall (9-3) will take his fourth stab at his 10th win of the season for the Barnstormers. He will be opposed by former York left-hander Daryl Harang (2-0).
NOTES: Witter has hit safely in 11 straight games with Lancaster and has homered in both since his return from the DL...The two hits tied a season low for Lancaster; the club had only two against York on June 20...Ward's seven homers against the Barnstormers this season ties the mark for most against Lancaster in a campaign...He shares the record with Henry Rodriguez and L.J. Biernbaum...The four steals by Jones was the most ever in a game by a Barnstormers opponent...Witter threw out the only other runner trying to steal - Brian Barton in the seventh...Jed Morris became the third Lancaster catcher to go on the DL this season...He was diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his right foot after being hit by a Ryan Glynn pitch on Wednesday.
