Zimmerman Hurls Complete Game Three-Hit Shutout, Saints Win 5-0 in Game 1 of Doubleheader

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX - The St. Paul Saints may have found pure gold in Ryan Zimmerman if he keeps pitching like he has in the first two outings of the season. On Tuesday night at AirHogs Stadium he hurled a 7.0 inning complete game three-hit shutout as the Saints took game one of the doubleheader over the Texas AirHogs 5-0.

Zimmerman allowed a leadoff single to Alvaro Rondon in the first, but got Ryne Willard to ground into a double play, one of two on the night. After retiring the side in order in the second he walked Trevor Sealey with two outs in the third. Rondon followed with a single to put runners at the corners, but Willard lined out to Tanner Vavra at short to end the inning.

In the fourth Zimmerman ran into his biggest trouble of the night. Ryan Wagner led off with a single to left and Levi Scott walked. Brian Regira sacrificed the runners over, but Zimmerman got Jake Luce on strikes and Beamer Weems to ground out to end the inning.

Zimmerman retired nine in a row going into the bottom of the seventh before walking Regira to lead off the inning. Once again Zimmerman got a double play, this time off the bat of Luce. He ended the game by getting Weems to fly out to right. Zimmerman allowed just three hits while walking three and striking out four. He threw 99 pitches, 53 for strikes and threw the third complete game shutout of his career, the first by a Saints pitcher this season. In two starts with the Saints Zimmerman has allowed one run on four hits in 13.0 innings.

The Saints gave him all the run support he needed in the first when Danny Oh led off the game with a single to right. Breland Almadova dropped down a bunt single and Nate Hanson's fly out to right sent Oh to third. Almadova pulled out shades of 2016 when he stole second and on the throw down Oh broke for the plate and stole home to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. It was one of four steals for the Saints in the game.

From there it was the Tony Thomas show. He hit a solo homer to right in the fourth, his fifth of the season, to make it 2-0.

In the fifth Thomas put the game away as the Saints loaded the bases on three walks. Thomas cleared them with a double off the base of the center field wall. He finished the game 2-4 with a double, home run, four RBI and a run scored.
