Zephyrs Win Two from Cubs

Metairie, LA – The New Orleans Zephyrs (65-62) defeated the Iowa Cubs (62-64) 4 to 2 and 10 to 2 on Saturday Night at Zephyr Field in front of 8,190. Game one was the completion of the June 3rd game that was suspended in the top of fourth due to a power outage.

The first game resumed with two outs in the top of the fourth with the scored tied at 1. Kirk Saarloos, making his first start for the Zephyrs since being optioned to New Orleans from Houston on Thursday, replaced Doug Sessions and retired Mike Mahoney to end the inning. The Zephyrs would go ahead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jason Lane would lead off the inning with a single, steal second and score on a double from Kyle Logan. After Jason Alfaro was hit by Cubs reliever Justin Kaye, Saarloos sacrificed Logan to third and Alfaro to second. Dave Matranga walked followed by a single from Henri Stanley. Alfaro would score on a wild pitch from Kaye.

Saarloos (5-0) picked up the win pitching 3 1/3 innings allowing one run on four hits. Kirk Bullinger pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save of the season. Kaye (1-3) suffered the loss pitching five innings allowing three runs on six hits.

In game two, The Zephyrs would score all the runs they would need with a run in the second and four in the third. The big blow was a three run homer from Alfaro, his ninth on the season. Sessions (7-4), who started the suspended game on June 3rd, started the second game picking up the win tossing five innings allowing two runs on six hits. Alan Benes (7-5) suffered the loss pitching 4 1/3 innings allowing eight runs on seven hits.

The series with the Cubs resumes on Sunday at 5:05 PM. Sunday is Hibernia Kids Day, WB Family Fun Fest, Boudreaux Birthday Bash and Kids Clinic prior to the game starting at 3:00 PM.
