Portland Beavers News Release

LAS VEGAS - Wilkin Ruan, Eric Riggs and Shane Victorino each had two hits to lead the Las Vegas 51s to a 7-1 victory Friday night over the Portland Beavers. With the loss, the Beavers fell two games behind first-place Edmonton in the Pacific Coast League's North Division.

Rodney Myers, who relieved starting pitcher Bill Simas in the fourth inning, earned the win by pitching three scoreless innings. The former Beaver gave up five hits, walked none and struck out one.

Carlton Loewer lost his third-straight decision, allowing seven runs and 13 hits in 4.2 innings. The right-hander hasn't won since July 9.

Following Loewer's start, Steve Watkins threw 3.1 scoreless frames. He allowed no hits, walked one and fanned four. Las Vegas jumped on Loewer early, taking a 1-0 first-inning lead on Chin-Feng Chen's run-scoring double to left field.

The 51s (68-57) extended their lead in the third, scoring four more times. Koyie Hill drove in the first run with a single and later scored on Riggs' single. Then, after Victorino hit a run-scoring double, Chad Hermansen capped the rally with an RBI single, giving Las Vegas a 5-0 lead.

In the fifth, Rodney Myers hit an RBI double and Ruan hit a run-scoring single to put the 51s on top, 7-0.

The Beavers (61-66) finally scored in the ninth when Khalil Greene hit a two-out RBI single.

Portland had 11 hits, but also left 11 men on base. Xavier Nady, Alex Fernandez, and Greene each had two hits for the Beavers.

NOTES: The Beavers placed Bernie Castro on the Disabled List with a season-ending knee injury ... he was replaced on Portland's roster by infielder Rico Washington, who hit .244 with 14 home runs and 60 RBIs at Class AA Mobile ... Washington went 2-for-3 in his Triple-A debut.
