New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Brian Lawrence pitched seven strong innings, and the New Orleans Zephyrs used a three-run sixth inning to topple the Omaha Royals 4-3 on Thursday night.

Lawrence kept Omaha hitters off balance throughout, limiting the Royals to one run and four hits while striking out seven. He allowed a home run to the game's second batter, Kurt Mertins, but the Royals did not have a baserunner reach second base until there were two outs in the seventh.

Lawrence (4-4) lowered his home ERA to 2.35 in seven games this season.

After Mertins put the Royals ahead early, he gave the Zephyrs a run back in the second inning on a throwing error while attempting to complete an inning-ending double play. Hector Luna scored to even the game at 1-1.

Still tied in the sixth, the Zephyrs took advantage of Omaha starter Anthony Lerew's bout of wildness to grab the lead. Lerew issued a one-out walk to Bryan Petersen, and Logan Morrison followed with a double high off the center field run to put runners at first and third.

Lerew then walked Luna to load the bases, and walked Donnie Murphy on a 3-2 pitch to force in the go-ahead run. Danny Richar then flared a single over the head of shortstop Irving Falu to plate the Zephyrs' third run, with another scoring on a passed ball by Edwin Bellorin.

Lerew (4-3) took the loss, giving up four runs - two earned - and three hits with five walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Omaha drew within a run in the eighth, courtesy of a two-run single by Scott Thorman. But Kasey Olenberger induced a double play off the bat of Jordan Parraz to end the threat.

Scott Strickland worked around a one-out single in the ninth to pick up his fifth save of the season.

The series and homestand comes to a conclusion on Friday, with a 7 p.m. start against the Royals. New Orleans will start Brad Stone, against former Zephyr Philip Humber.
