New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
The New Orleans Zephyrs got back on track this afternoon with two crucial wins over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. A 2-1 victory over the Sox in the first game came on the heels of thirty consecutive scoreless innings. It looked like the Z's would continue their scoreless streak when they tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth off of Jason Lane's single to right field that scored shortstop Eric Bruntlett. The game remained tied until the bottom of the eleventh when Jason Alfaro knocked in Royce Huffman with a base hit to left field. With runners on first and second Alfaro squared to bunt, but then on a heads up play pulled the bat back and punched the ball into left field.
The Z's used seven pitchers who combined to allow ten hits and one earned-run. Brandon Puffer (1-1) picked up the victory when he pitched 1/3 of an inning in the eleventh. Right fielder Royce Huffman was 3-for-5 and scored the game-winning run. Jason Lane returned to the lineup after a stretch on the DL and went 3-for-5 with one RBI. Starting pitcher Bob Scanlan pitched five shutout innings allowing only two hits and one walk.
Colorado Springs starting pitcher Cory Vance threw seven shutouts innings allowing 7 hits and two walks. Reliever Brian Smith picked up his second loss of the season (0-2).
The Sox had little help from their defense who committed three costly errors, including an errand throw that allowed Huffman to put himself in scoring position.
In the second game of the split doubleheader the Z's relied on the powerful pitching of right-hander Doug Sessions, who tossed a complete-game shut-out. Sessions had plenty of offensive help as the Zephyrs devoured the Sox's pitching with 14 hits and nine runs.
The Z's jumped out front early when shortstop Dave Matranga led off with a double down the left field line, then moved to third on outfielder Henri Stanley's sacrifice bunt and scored on second baseman Trip Cromer's single to left. Catcher Raul Chavez then homered to give Sessions a 3-0 lead. That's all Sessions needed as he went on to allow only four hits, walk just two batters and strike out nine. Sessions moves to 3-1 on the season and the Zephyrs continue to lead the East Division of the Pacific Coast League with a 39-30 record. Offensively, the Z's were led by Cromer, who went 3-5 with two RBI and one run scored and Chavez who went 1-2 with three RBI and two runs scored.
The two teams tangle again Sunday, June 15 at 5:05 pm and wind up the series at 12:05 pm Monday, June 16. Colorado starting pitcher Denny Neagle will get the nod for the Sox Monday in probably his last rehab outing before he rejoins the Rockies.
