Beavers Can't Catch up to Isotopes

Portland Beavers News Release

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Albuquerque Isotopes always managed to stay one step ahead of the Portland Beavers Friday night.

Albuquerque catcher Paul Hoover went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and provided a key two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure an 11-9 victory over the Beavers in their series opener.

Mark Quinn's pinch-hit, three-run home run in the sixth trimmed the Isotopes' lead to 8-7. But Hoover's double gave his team a four-run advantage and highlighted Albuquerque's three-run insurance policy in the eighth.

Those runs proved vital, as the Beavers rallied for a pair in the top of the ninth before Blaine Neal closed the door for his sixth save of the year. Despite allowing six runs in 5.2 innings of work, Nate Bump got the win for the Isotopes. Bump did his part offensively, though, tallying three hits and driving in two runs with a double in the second inning to give the Isotopes an early 3-0 lead. Jason Wood hit a solo home run, his 12th of the year, to lead off the second.

Tagg Bozied hit a two-run home run and Portland rallied to tie things at 3-3 an inning later. From there, though, the Isotopes teased the Beavers but never relinquished the lead to move to 32-36 on the season.

Jermaine Clark and Yamid Haad each contributed three hits and two runs apiece for the Beavers, who committed three errors in the game. Portland used six pitchers, with right-hander Jaret Wright taking the loss after allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks in 1.2 innings of relief.

With their second straight loss, the Beavers fell to 36-33.

NOTES: On Friday, the San Diego Padres recalled Oliver Perez and outrighted right-hander Carlton Loewer and optioned right-hander Brian Tollberg to Portland ... the Beavers (13) and Isotopes (14) combined for 27 hits in the game.
