New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
GAMEDAY- The New Orleans Zephyrs (28-32) continue a 8 game home-stand today and open a 4 game series against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. The Zephyrs won 1 of the 4 games in this homestand against Nashville.
GOOD TO BE OFF- Yesterday was an off day for the Zephyrs, their first in 20 days. The Z's have hated Wednesday's this season going 1-6. Not a bad day to use as an off day.
TEE IT UP â The Zephyrs hosted the 7th annual Zephyr Golf Tournament yesterday at Eastover. The winning team was from the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and shot a 56, 14 under par. The proceeds from the event will benefit the United Way.
BULLY TO THE BIGS! - RHP Kirk Bullinger has been promoted to Houston. The Zephyrs closer leads the PCL in saves with 14 and is among the league leaders in games pitched. He will report to the Astros tomorrow in Milwaukee.
DUCKWORTH TO THE ZEPHS â Astros RHP Brandon Duckworth has been optioned to the Zephyrs. Duckworth, who was 1-1 with a 7.56 ERA over 13 games (four starts) will join the Zephyrs' rotation. He is expected to join the team this weekend.
ROSTER NOTES- New Orleans has 24 active players on the roster. The Z's also have a player on the DL. RHP Doug Sessions is on the DL, with a sore right shoulder. He has an aggravated labrum and pitched BP the other day. He is still sore and will need some additional time.
ALL-STAR MALONEY â Z's Manager Chris Maloney has been named to be a coach for the PCL All-Star at this years AAA Game in Pawtucket. Salt Lake Manager Mike Brumley will manage the PCL and Iowa hitting coach Pat Listach will also be a coach.
HIT STREAK ON HOLD â Zephyr 2b Chris Burke is 26 for 60 (.429) in his 14 game hitting streak. He has 9 doubles and 5 homers, 15 runs and 12 RBI In his streak. The 14 game hit streak is the longest by a Z this season. Burke left last Friday's game in Albuquerque and is listed as day to day with a hamstring strain.
BASEBALL CAMP â The Zephyrs players and coaches will be working the annual Zephyrs Baseball Camp this weekend. Its on Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM â 2PM for kids ages 8-14. The cost is $75 per camper and limited spots are still available. Register by calling 734-5155.
4 MILLION FANS-- The Z's, which celebrate 12 years in New Orleans this year, will honor the four millionth fan to attend a home game sometime this weekend. The four millionth fan will win numerous gifts and prizes including a pair of Zephyrs season tickets for the next two years, two roundtrip airline tickets anywhere in the Continental U.S., courtesy of American Airlines, $100 shopping spree at The Esplanade Mall, a team autographed ball and jersey, a free T-Mobile cell phone and much more.
HIATT CLOSING IN- OF Phil Hiatt has hit 12 homers since May 15th and has 299 Minor League Bombs, just 1 away from 300. He is the active leader in the Minor Leagues! He is 3rd in the PCL with 15 homers. The all-time Minor League Home Run King is Hector Espino with 484.
THE LONGBALL â New Orleans have hit 66 homers this season. The Z's hit a total of 88 last year. New Orleans has homered in 17 straight games, a team record and have 31 in that stretch.
SIX IS THE MAGIC NUMBER â The Z's are 17-3 in games they have scored 6 or more runs. In 2003 New Orleans was 37-7.
IRON MAN- Royce Huffman is the only player that has played in all of the games. No Z player has started every game.
ROLAIDS MAN OF THE MONTH -- Kirk Bullinger of the New Orleans Zephyrs is the Pacific Coast League winner of the Rolaids Relief Man competition for May, compiling 32 points on 10 saves and a 1-0 record
TANK @ ALL-STAR EVENTS â Danny Fatheree has been selected to catch in the bullpen and on the field during this years Major League Baseball All-Star Events in Houston. He will participate in the Futures Game, Home Run Derby and the All-Star Game.
