Edmonton Trappers News Release
Today's Pacific Coast League game between the Edmonton Trappers and the Las Vegas 51s, originally scheduled to begin at 7:05 PM, has been postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Friday, June 11. The first game will start at 6:05 PM with gates opening at TELUS Field at 5:05 PM. Edmonton has split all three doubleheaders that it has played so far in 2004. The rainout is the club's fourth postponement at home this season. The Trappers have played just 19 games at TELUS Field this season, going 11-8 in those contests.
The Trappers entered play on Thursday night in third place in the North Division of the Pacific Coast League, 5 ½ games behind the first-place Tacoma Rainiers. Edmonton was 3-5 on an eight-game road trip that ended on Tuesday night in Sacramento. After splitting the first four games of the trip at Cashman Field in Las Vegas the club lost three of four games to the defending PCL Champions at Raley Field. Three of the five losses were by one run, dropping Edmonton's record in one-run games on the road to 1-9. The club is 6-0 in one-run games at TELUS Field.
Outfielder Ryan Church currently leads the Pacific Coast League with a .379 batting average. He is third in the circuit in slugging percentage (.661) and second in on-base percentage (.449). Church is batting .416 (32-for-77) with five home runs and 17 RBI in his last 21 games, May 14 (G2)-June 8. He was named the PCL Batter of the Week for the period ending June 6. Shortstop Maicer Izturis, who is currently on the seven-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain, is tied for fifth in the league with a .347 batting average and is fifth with a .443 on-base percentage.
On the pitching side of things left-hander Scott Downs is 5-3 and is ranked eighth in the PCL with a 3.50 ERA. He has walked only 15 batters in 74.2 innings this season. In the bullpen the club will look to Jason Childers, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers this week to assume the closer's role. Childers was 1-0 with a 1.26 ERA for Triple-A Indianapolis at the time of the trade and was tied for the International League lead with 15 saves.
Right-hander Ron Chiavacci, 1-4 with a 5.40 ERA in 16 relief appearances will make his first start of the season for the Trappers in the first game. He will be opposed by Las Vegas right-hander Joel Hanrahan, who is 1-2 with a 5.36 ERA and was ranked by Baseball America as the fifth-best prospect in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization coming into this season. Downs will start the second game of the doubleheader and will be opposed by right-hander Heath Totten, who is 2-7 with a 5.95 ERA for the 51s this season.
