New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Metairie, LA - New Orleans Zephyrs relief pitcher Nate Field has been selected to play for Team USA at next month's World Cup, it was announced Thursday.

Field becomes the second Zephyrs pitcher to pitch for Team USA in the last two years. Brandon Knight was named to last year's Olympic team that went on to win the bronze medal in Beijing.

The 34-year-old Field is 5-4 with a 3.25 ERA in 49 games for the Zephyrs this season, and leads the club with nine saves. His 22 saves ranks him fourth all-time in New Orleans history, while his 98 appearances ranks seventh.

Field made 89 appearances in the Major Leagues between 2002-07 with Kansas City, Colorado and Florida, compiling a 5.13 ERA.

Team USA begins World Cup play on Wednesday, September 9 in Regensburg, Germany in a first-round pool with Venezuela, China and host Germany. The top two teams will advance to play in either the Netherlands or Italy, and the finals commence September 22 in Italy.

The United States is the defending World Cup champion, having defeated Cuba 6-3 in Taipei in the 2007 final. It was the first title for Team USA since 1974.

The Zephyrs begin their final homestand of the season at 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 4 against the Nashville Sounds.
