Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK - It took nearly 24 hours to finish, but the Express (58-75) got its second win in a row in the first game of a double header against Nashville (68-65) Thursday night at Dell Diamond, 6-4. Round Rock doubled up with a 2-1 win in the second game.
Game 1
The first game Thursday night was a continuation of Wednesday night's game, which was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Express up 5-1.
By the time the game finally ended, Tommy Manzella led the Express with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored at the plate.
Wednesday night, Round Rock jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning, as Reggie Abercrombie led off with a double to right-center field, and Manzella followed with a double of his own down the left field line, scoring Abercrombie. After a Chris Johnson strikeout, Matt Kata singled up the middle to score Manzella and give the Express a 2-0 lead.
Round Rock added to that lead in the second inning when Abercrombie walked with one out, Aaron Boone singled to center field and Manzella reached on an error to load the bases. Johnson then doubled to left field to score Abercrombie and Boone, and Kata hit a sacrifice fly to score Manzella and give the Express a 5-0 lead.
Hernan Iribarren got Nashville on the board in the third inning when he tripled to center field, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Patrick Arlis.
The scored stayed that way through the fourth inning when the storm rolled in and suspended play.
Express starter Andy Van Hekken left the game after the storm hit, losing what was a gem to that point. Van Hekken allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts in four innings of work.
When the game picked up again Thursday night, scoring was at a premium until the final two innings.
Lou Santangelo doubled to right-center field to lead off the eighth inning, and scored from third later in the inning when Mark Saccomanno singled to right field to make it 6-1.
Corey Patterson kept things interesting for Nashville in the top of the ninth with a three-run blast that landed on the roof of the center field shed off of Express reliever Casey Daigle to make it 6-4.
Chad Paronto came into the game to minimize the damage, and converted his 23rd save of the season.
Round Rock ended up using seven pitchers total in the game.
Game 2
Express starter Mark McLemore did his job, holding the Sounds to one run on four hits over five innings of work, earning his fifth win of the season.
Nashville struck first in the top of the second inning when Joe Koshansky hit a solo home run off of McLemore into the Sounds' bullpen. The ball just made it past the outstretched arm of Round Rock right fielder Reggie Abercrombie, who climbed the wall in an attempt to rob the home run.
Round Rock answered in the bottom of the second when Johnson walked to lead off the frame, and Chad Spann hit a two-run home run off of Nashville starter Lindsay Gulin to give the Express a 2-1 lead.
The Express loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but Saccomanno struck out and Abercrombie grounded out to third to end the threat.
Paronto came in and recorded his second save of the night, and his 24th of the season.
The two teams meet again Friday night at 7:05 p.m. with left-hander Polin Trinidad taking the mound for Round Rock and right-hander Tim Dillard taking the mound for Nashville.
