Kitchener Rangers News Release

The Kitchener Rangers defeated the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors 6-1 at the Hershey Centre on Sunday afternoon. Zach Lorentz scored twice for Kitchener, while Radek Faksa added a goal and two assists.

It was a quiet opening period until the Rangers found the back of the net with less than two minutes to play. Zach Lorentz tipped a shot from Ben Fanelli past Mississauga goalie Spencer Martin. Also assisting on Lorentz's eighth of the year was Radek Faksa.

Shots on goal were even at nine through the first 20 minutes.

The Majors evened the score in the opening minute of the second period, when Finnish forward Mika Partanen fired a low shot past Kitchener starter John Gibson. Jamie Wise and Alex Cord were credited with the assists.

Just 42 seconds later, Kitchener would jump back in front. Lorentz tipped in his second of the game, jumping on a shot from Max Iafrate. The sophomore forward has four goals in three games this week. Faksa collected his second helper of the afternoon on the play.

The Rangers continued to pressure early in the second, taking a 3-1 lead when Julian Melchiori's shot from the point found the back of the net. The goal was the overage defensemen's first of the season, assisted by captain Michael Catenacci.

Rookie Josh Sterk added his fifth of the season just 1:14 later to push Kitchener's lead to three. Cory Genovese's shot was stopped by Martin, but Sterk was in front to pot the rebound. Andrew Crescenzi also picked up a helper, his first point since returning from injury on Friday.

The Majors out-shot Kitchener 15-12 in the second period.

The Rangers opened the third period with an unassisted, short-handed goal from Faksa, who launched a heavy shot that beat Martin on the short side. The Czech import has tallied 15 goals this season and leads all OHL rookies with a total of 32 points.

Kitchener took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play midway through the final frame. Cody Sol collected a pass from Melchiori and beat Martin glove-side for his sixth of the season. Sol leads the league with a plus/minus rating of plus-26. Gibson was credited with the second assist.

Mississauga finished the third period with a 12-8 advantage, but Gibson stopped 35 of 36 shots to pick up his 14th win of the year.

The Rangers and Majors split their season series 1-1. With the win, Kitchener improves to 21-9-1-0, while the Majors fall to 14-13-1-3.
