
Zac Veen Homers as Part of 4-Hit Game But Yard Goats Lose 10-8

Reading, PA- The Reading Fightin Phils scored six runs in the seventh inning to make a late comeback and defeat the Hartford Yard Goats 10-8 on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pennsylvania. The Yard Goats had a 5-2 lead in the sixth inning, and a 5-3 edge heading to the seventh before the Fightins scored six times on five hits in the frame. The Yard Goats have lost six consecutive games for the first time this season. Zac Veen had four hits, including his fifth home run of the season, an opposite field solo shot in the second inning. Veen had homered in back-to-back games. Jarrod Cande pitched well over five innings and allowed two runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts and left the game with a 5-2 lead. Carlos De La Cruz blasted two homers for Reading.
The Yard Goats took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Zac Veen cranked a solo home run into the left field party deck off Reading starter Matt Osterberg. Hartford added a pair of runs in the fifth inning when Warming Bernabel ripped a two out two-RBI double down the left field line, scoring Adael Amador and Ryan Ritter and giving Hartford a 3-0 lead.
Hartford starting pitcher Jarrod Cande did not allow a hit over the first four innings and retired 12 of the first 13 batters faced with two strikeouts. Bryce Ball led off the fifth inning with a walk and Kendall Simmonds followed with a two-run homer to make it a 3-2 game.
After the Yard Goats added a run in the sixth inning on a fielding error, Sterlin Thompson continued his impressive series with an RBI single in the sixth inning, one of his three hits on the evening, and it was 5-2 Hartford. Reading answered with a solo home run off reliever Evan Shawver to make it 5-3 after six innings.
In the seventh, the Fightins scored six runs on five hits with most of the damage against reliever Brendan Hardy. Kendall Simmons started the rally with a double and was driven home by a single from Ethan Wilson to make it 5-4. Robert Moore tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI single, and Jose Rodriguez put Reading in front with a two-run single to make it 7-5. Carlos De La Cruz capped the rally with a two-run homer.
The Yard Goats and Fightin Phils will play the fourth game of the six-game series on Friday night at 6:45 PM at FirstEnergy Stadium in PA. RHP Andrew Quezada will start for the Yard Goats and LHP Lachian Wells will pitch for Reading.
