Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (49-14-3-1) got goals from three rookies and 21 saves from Sebastian Cossa as they blanked the Medicine Hat Tigers (11-53-3-1) by a 3-0 score on Friday night at Co-Op Place.
The Oil Kings stormed out to an early 1-0 lead as Cole Miller scored his ninth goal of the season just 3:17 into the game.
Miller won a defensive zone faceoff, Shea Van Olm gathered in the loose puck and zipped it back to Miller in the neutral zone who would then handoff to Jaxsen Wiebe, only to take a return feed alone in front of the Tiger net where he would make no mistake.
The Oil Kings had a handful of chances to extend their lead in the first period, but couldn't solve Garin Bjorklund a second time, settling for a one-goal lead through 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Oil Kings extended their lead as Medicine Hat native Dawson Seitz notched his seventh goal of the season with a highlight reel marker just before the halfway mark of the frame.
The Oil Kings rookie charged into the right-wing circle of the Medicine Hat zone and launched a wicked wrishot over the left shoulder of Bjorklund and just under the crossbar.
Later in the period, Jaxsen Wiebe was awarded a penalty shot but was denied by Bjorklund to keep the Edmonton lead at just two through 40 minutes of play.
Van Olm gave Edmonton a 3-0 lead less than three minutes into the third period after Ethan Peters found him with a pass in the left-circle and he snapped a shot top-shelf for his third point of the hockey game.
Cossa would stop all nine shots he faced in the third period as the Oil Kings cruised to the 3-0 victory.
Cossa finished the night making 21 saves for his sixth shutout of the season and 33rd win, while Bjorklund made 32 saves for the Tigers. The Oil Kings went 0-for-2 on the power play, the Tigers were 0-for-4.
