Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber joined Univision's Despierta América on Wednesday morning to announce the MLS is Back Tournament.
The tournament will run from July 8 to August 11 and take place at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. It marks a return to competitive play for the league, its 26 clubs, and its players, following a more than three-month pause.
"MLS is back," said Garber. "That's the story, MLS is going to be back."
Below are some details laid out by Garber on the plan for the league and the tournament:
The 35-day tournament will be closed to the public.
The tournament will feature a World Cup-style format, beginning with a group stage before transitioning into knockout rounds. There will be five groups of four teams each and one group with six teams. The group stage will include 16 consecutive days of fútbol and 54 total matches. The winner of the tournament
Groups will be determined at a live draw as the winner will earn an automatic berth in the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League.
