Bridgewater, NJ: The York Revolution scored three times in the top of the tenth inning to defeat the Somerset Patriots 5-2 in front of 5,889 fans on a cold, misty Friday evening at TD Bank Ballpark. The Revs (6-8) snap a four-game losing streak while ending Somerset's four-game winning streak.
The game got off to a strange start as Revs righty Victor Mateo worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first, and appeared to be settling in with a pair of strikeouts to begin the second. But a two-out hit by pitch deflected off of Yovan Gonzalez and struck plate umpire Tim McCaffrey who was forced to exit the game. A long delay ensued as the umpires transitioned to a two-man crew for the remainder of the night.
The Revs got on the board in the third when Jose Constanza kept the inning alive with a two-out single to left, stole second, and came home on Joel Guzman's RBI single to left field.
Somerset answered right back on a two-run homer to center by Jerry Sands in the bottom of the third, giving the Patriots a 2-1 lead.
It remained that way until the sixth when Guzman sat back and drilled a towering opposite field home run to right, his second of the year, knotting the game at 2-2.
The Revs had an opportunity in the seventh but second baseman Scott Kelly made a diving stop on a Constanza ground ball, stranding two runners.
The Revs would capitalize in a big way in extra innings, playing their first extra-inning game of the season. Travis Witherspoon sparked the rally with a leadoff walk, and Alonzo Harris legged out an attempted sacrifice for a bunt single. Constanza then slashed a single to left on a fake bunt, sending Witherspoon sprinting home to beat the throw for the go-ahead run. With one out and the infield in, Michael Burgess roped a two-run single to right-center, giving the Revs a 5-2 cushion.
Luke Westphal ended a great night for the Revolution bullpen, striking out the side after a leadoff walk for his second career save.
Brad Allen (1-0) picked up the win after a quick 1-2-3 ninth inning. Prior to that, Michael Click rolled three groundouts in a perfect sixth, Hawtin Buchanan stranded two in the seventh, and Jarret Martin worked past a leadoff walk to retire the next three in the eighth and keep the game tied.
Mateo allowed just two unearned runs on four hits over five innings in the no-decision, lowering his ERA to 1.15.
David Kubiak (0-2) suffered the loss for Somerset, allowing the three-run rally in the tenth.
Each of the top five batters in York's lineup posted two hits, as the Revs out-hit the Patriots 11-5.
