Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

Bridgeport, CT- The Bridgeport Bluefish (8-7) were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers (8-7) 6-2 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard in the opener of a three-game weekend series. The game began under a dense fog after being delayed at the start 53 minutes by inclement weather.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Chris Rearick did not factor in the game's final outcome, allowing just one run in six quality innings on the mound, striking out five. Lancaster Starting Pitcher Rommie Lewis (2-1) collected the win, giving up two runs in six and one-third innings pitched, striking out six. Lancaster took the 1-0 lead off Rearick in the top of the third on the speed of leadoff hitter Darian Sandford. With one out, Sandford walked and proceeded to steal his Atlantic League leading 11th and 12th bases of the season. With the infield drawn in, Caleb Gindel chopped a ball over the leap of third baseman Jose Cuevas into left field for an RBI single, plating Sandford with the game's first run.

Bridgeport would get even at one in the home half of the fifth inning against Lewis on an RBI groundout by Ozney Guillen, scoring Daniel Fields after he led off the frame with a free pass. The Bluefish would take their first and only lead of the night at 2-1 the next inning when Fields drove in Cuevas with a run-scoring single after Cuevas began the rally with a base knock of his own. The Barnstormers answered right back in the top half of the seventh against losing pitcher Zac Grotz (0-1). Vladimir Frias got the visitors even with an RBI double that scored Kevin Ahrens after he singled with one man out. With two away and Frias a third base, Sandford was at it again as he dragged a bunt down the first base line and eluded the tag of Sean Burroughs, enabling the lead run in Frias to score. Caleb Gindel followed and cracked an RBI double into the gap in left centerfield which scored Sandford to give Lancaster a 4-2 advantage. The Barnstormers added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth which gave the game its final score of 6-2. Guillen reached on an infield single back in the bottom half of the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to a team-best 12 consecutive games overall. Cuevas and Burroughs led the way for the Bluefish with a pair of hits each.

Bridgeport continues their three-game weekend series with the Lancaster Barnstormers at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Saturday, May 6th. First pitch is scheduled for 6:12 P.M. The second Summer Saturday of the season focuses on giving back with Pink in the Park, benefiting St. Vincent's Medical Center. In addition to supporting a wonderful cause, the first 500 fans in attendance will also receive a B.B. Batting Pin.
