St. Lucie Mets News Release

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Gabriel Ynoa made the best start of the St. Lucie Mets' season to lead the Mets to a 5-0 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Friday at Auto Exchange Stadium.

Ynoa dominated the Blue Jays from the start. He tossed seven scoreless innings, limiting the Blue Jays to four hits. He struck out 11, a season high for any Mets pitcher in one game. He did not issue a walk.

The Mets scored the only run they needed in the first. T.J. Rivera singled off of Matt Boyd with two outs, then Jairo Perez drilled a ball to left field. With the sun in his eyes, Dwight Smith, Jr., misjudged the ball and it went passed him, allowing Rivera to score.

In the sixth, Eudy Pina singled home Perez with the bases loaded to make it 2-0.

Albert Cordero crushed his first home run of the year, a two-run shot in the eighth inning, to extend the lead to 4-0.

Perez made it a two-hit night when his RBI in the ninth scored Dilson Herrera.

But the game belonged to Ynoa. He gave up a pair of singles with two outs in the first but Cordero tagged out Marcus Knecht trying to score from third. That would be as close as Dunedin came to home.

Ynoa stuck out six of seven batters at one point from the second inning into the fourth. From the second inning through the seventh he gave up one infield single and a double. Neither runner advanced. He retired 18 of the last 20 he faced, including the last seven in a row.

Gonzalez Germen, in his fourth rehab appearance for New York, struck out two and stranded two in the eighth.

Randy Fontanez, voted to the FSL All Star team earlier this week, struck out two and also stranded two in the ninth to close out the game.

Overall, the Mets struck out 15 Blue Jays.

Perez went 2 for 5.

Brandon Nimmo was forced to leave the game in the sixth after he was hit by Boyd on the right wrist or forearm in the fifth. He initially stayed in the game to run at first.

Boyd suffered his first loss of the season. He gave up one unearned run in five innings.

The Mets (35-26) have taken two of the first three games from Dunedin (41-19), the top team in the FSL. They will go for the series victory in the finale on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The game will feature two of the top starters in ERA in the FSL. Steven Matz (1.73) goes for the Mets, while Daniel Norris (1.12) throws for Dunedin.
