Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - Jhohan Acevedo hit a two-run walk-off single in the ninth inning to cap a wild finish on Friday night at Roger Dean Stadium as the Palm Beach Cardinals rallied past the Clearwater Threshers 4-3. It is the Cardinals second walk-off win in the series and fourth overall this season.
Two outs, bases loaded, bottom of the ninth. It was the perfect situation for Jhohan Acevedo to create some late-night fireworks. Trailing 3-2 in the inning, the Cardinals center fielder did just that, ripping a two-run single into center field to score Bruce Caldwell and Charlie Tilson and give Palm Beach its fourth straight win.
Casey Rasmus drew a walk, Caldwell lined a single to center, and Tilson smacked a pinch-hit single to load the bases in the ninth before Acevedo recorded the game-winner.
Clearwater (12-48) scored three runs in the final two innings, including two in the ninth to take the lead 3-2, but couldn't hold off the Cardinals' dramatic comeback.
The Cardinals (30-31) struck first in the game and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Alex Mejia led off the frame with a single and David Washington followed with a towering two-run home run off Clearwater starter Ethan Stewart. The opposite field blast was Washington's 10th long ball of the year - the second most in the Florida State League this season.
Mejia went 1-for-4 on the night and has now hit safely in 11 straight games - the longest active streak in the league.
Michael Mayers was solid on the mound for Palm Beach, allowing just one unearned run on six hits over seven innings while fanning five. Mayers kept the Sharks off the board through seven innings but a single and an error to start the eighth would be all for the right-hander.
Chris Thomas walked one and gave up an RBI hit in the eighth in relief of Mayers. The run scored was charged to the Palm Beach starter.
Thomas hasn't allowed a run in nine innings over his first seven appearances for Palm Beach. He has recorded 13 strikeouts to just two walks and has only surrendered three hits over the span.
Danny Miranda (1-1), who gave up two runs in the ninth inning, was credited with the win despite being pegged with a blown save.
The Cardinals also won in walk-off fashion against the Threshers on Wednesday night, as Tilson drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Birds a 4-3 win.
Lee Ridenhour (1-5) was given the blown save and the loss for Clearwater after allowing two runs on three hits in the ninth.
KC Serna went 4-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Threshers offensively.
The two clubs will wrap up the four-game series on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. RH Nick Petree (3-2, 1.16) will start for Palm Beach against RH Colin Kleven (1-7, 5.50) for Clearwater. The game will be broadcast live on PalmBeachCardinals.com.
