Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

TAMPA, FL - In a game of opportunity, a couple of swings or a couple of misses can change the course of an entire evening. The early indications were that the Stone Crabs were getting right after Rafael De Paula, who escaped through the trap door in each of his five innings. Eventually, the luck ran out, and the Yankees took over in the middle innings on their way to a 4-1 victory at George M. Steinbrenner Field to move a game up in the series.

The first inning could not have started any better for the `Crabs, who got a leadoff bunt single from Tommy Coyle. When trying to steal second base, Yankees catcher Trent Garrison's throw hopped off into center field, and Coyle was at third with nobody out. A bloop single down the right field line off the bat of Leonardo Reginatto scored the run, and it was 1-0 two batters in.

In the second, Maxx Tissenbaum's leadoff double to right center preceded a Josh Sale single into right field. Marty Gantt went down looking after just three pitches, and De Pauls followed it with a strikeout of Coyle. The inning ended when Reginatto grounded out to third, spelling just the beginning of the issues with runners on base. This continued in the third when Justin O'Conner's infield single to the right side helped him get to third after Tyler Goeddel's ground rule double bounced over the wall in left center. Kes Carter's lineout to short and Tissenbaum's groundout to second kept the game 1-0.

Austin Pruitt's night was going well until the third inning. Claudio Custodio's leadoff single led to a stolen base at second, and in a role reversal, O'Conner's throw to get the out deflected off Reginatto and got into center field. The next batter, Jake Cave, grounded out to second and plated up Custodio from third to tie the score. In the fifth, Jose Toussen started things with a walk before stealing second. Garrison's flyout to the warning track in right allowed Toussen to tag from third, where'd he'd soon score on a wild pitch to put the Yanks up 2-1.

They weren't finished in the sixth when Greg Bird's one out grounder to short was fielded by Reginatto, who threw off his back foot for a costly error. A single by Dante Bichette and a wild pitch pushed the runners to second and third. With two outs, Yeicok Calderon hit a slow roller to second, but Coyle's throw was late and the infield single scored Bird to make it 3-1. Parker Markel was responsible for the final Yankees final run in the seventh after Bird's ground rule double scored Garrison, who opened the frame with a single.
