Indianapolis Indians News Release

MOOSIC, Pa. -- Right fielder Jason Lane clobbered a three-run homer and third baseman Cody Ransom whacked a two-run dinger in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's 5-1 victory over Indianapolis Thursday evening at PNC Field.

The Yankees improve to an International League-best 31-17 overall and 19-9 at home, while the Indians fall to 23-25 on the season and 11-13 on the road.

Lane blasted his ninth long ball of the season in the first after 2B Bernie Castro beat out a bunt single and LF Justin Christian drew a base on balls.

Ransom then crushed his seventh roundtripper of the campaign in the fourth after 1B Eric Duncan reached on fielding error.

Scranton/W-B collected just three hits and three walks on the night, with no individual reaching base twice.

Yankees RHP Dan Giese (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO), who entered the contest with the league's best ERA at 0.96, improved to 4-2 with the win.

Indians RHP Ty Taubenheim (7.0 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO) slipped to 3-6 with the loss. He is now 3-1 with a 2.64 ERA in five starts at home, but 0-5 with an 8.22 ERA in five starts on the road.

Tribe CF Andrew McCutchen (3-for-4) and LF Nyjer Morgan (2-for-4, 1 RBI) recorded the game's only multi-hit performances.

Indianapolis scored its lone run in the third when 1B Adam Boeve lined a double to right and eventually scored on Morgan's base knock to right.

The Indians put runners in scoring position in the fourth and ninth frames, but failed to capitalize both times.

The teams continue their four-game series on Friday at 7 p.m. RHP John Van Benschoten is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while LHP Kei Igawa is expected to get the nod for Scranton/W-B.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.

Post-game quotes -- OF Andrew McCutchen

(why was Yankees RHP Dan Giese so good tonight?) "(Dan) Giese was hitting his spots tonight, but he also benefitted from (Chris) Stewart framing a lot of pitches. It's frustrating for a hitter when those pitches just off the plate are being called strikes, but you have to stay in there and battle."

(is this team trying too hard with runners in scoring position?) "I don't know if we're trying too hard, but, lately, we haven't done well with runners in scoring position. Those runners (at second or third) are definitely in the back of your mind when you go to the plate. The key is staying within yourself and not chasing pitches out of the strike zone. We need to have the same approach, just like there are no runners on base."
