Richmond, VA- The Durham Bulls thumped the Richmond Braves 17-3 at The Diamond Thursday. The Bulls scored eight runs in the second inning and pounded 22 hits to move to within a game of the first place Braves in the IL South Division.
The Bulls blew the game open in the second inning, sending 12 men to the plate. Reid Brignac, Elliott Johnson, and Jon Weber knocked in runs with singles. Mike DiFelice chased two in with a single and Chris Richard tripled three home. Joel Guzman smacked a home run in the fifth and plated a run with a single in the sixth to push the Bulls into double figures. DiFelice singled a run home in the seventh. The Bulls tacked on six more runs in the ninth, an outburst highlighted by a Richard grand slam. The Braves scored three runs in the home half. Scott Thorman and Diory Hernandez each doubled a run in.
Mitch Talbot worked eight innings to earn the win. Brad Nelson took the loss. Richard had four hits and seven RBI to lead the Bulls. Thorman, Hernandez, and Derrick Arnold, who also pitched an inning, had two hits for the Braves.
