Y'Alls Run Into Good Pitching Again, Lose Series to Joliet
June 8, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
JOLIET, IL - After a seven-inning gem from Cam Aufderheide last night, Florence hoped to bounce back with the bats tonight. Instead, Joliet starter Cole Cook outdid his teammate. The lefty struck out eight and walked none over seven innings to pave the way to a 6-2 victory over Florence.
Cook only faced one batter over the minimum through the first five innings. He started to run into a little bit of trouble in the sixth and the seventh innings - Florence hit four doubles combined over those two innings - but Cook limited the damage to a single run in each inning. Chandler Brierley pitched the final two innings for the Slammers (12-12) to close out the win.
Florence, meanwhile, had to piece it together from the start. Jared Cheek only pitched one inning and left after his warmup tosses before the second frame due to an apparent injury. David Stiehl pitched long relief and allowed three runs over four innings. Kent Klyman allowed two in the seventh - the first runs he has allowed all year.
Though pitching was the main story, the Joliet bats stayed hot early in the game with four runs over the first four innings. The second batter of the game, Scott Holzwasser, cracked a home run to jump out to an early 1-0. In the fourth with Joliet now on top 2-0, Luke Mangieri launched a two-run shot to take a 4-0 lead. Kyle Jacobsen homered in the seventh and Brylie Ware picked up an RBI single to end the scoring for Joliet.
Florence (7-15) scored its only runs on RBI doubles for Joe Lytle and Ethan Stern. The Y'alls have been outscored 10-4 so far in this series and have only won one game when scoring fewer than seven runs.
Joliet looks for the sweep tomorrow, June 9, with Logan Schmitt on the mound. The Y'alls have yet to announce a starting pitcher. First pitch is at 6:35 PM central/7:35 PM eastern from Duly Health and Care Field.
