Grizzlies Drop Middle Game at Schaumburg

June 8, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release

The Gateway Grizzlies were held to just three hits offensively by Schaumburg Boomers starter Ryan Middendorf (3-1) on Wednesday night at Wintrust Field, and committed four errors defensively in a 4-1 loss, evening their midweek series at one game apiece.

A leadoff error in the bottom of the first inning led to a pair of unearned runs against Gateway starter Clint Freeman (0-1), and gave the Boomers a 2-0 lead that was expanded to 3-0 the next inning, when Nick Oddo hit a solo home run to right field.

Gateway got three walks from Middendorf in the first two innings, but the right-hander preceded to retire the next 11 Grizzlies in a row, pitching a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Breland Almadova broke it up with a clean single to right field. In the seventh, Gateway would also break up the shutout when Peter Zimmermann launched his sixth homer of the season to left-center field to make it a 3-1 Schaumburg lead.

But the Boomers took advantage of two wild pitches in the bottom half of the seventh to get that run back, and the Grizzlies could not manage a late comeback against Middendorf or Darryl Thompson, who pitched the ninth for the save as the Boomers evened up the series.

The Grizzlies and Boomers will now play a rubber game to decide the series on Thursday, June 9, at 6:30 p.m., with Sam Gardner pitching for the Grizzlies against Schaumburg's Shumpei Yoshikawa at Wintrust Field.
