Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
BEND, Ore. - The Yakima Valley Pippins prevailed in an offensive shootout, knocking off the Bend Elks 15-10 Thursday night at Vince Genna Stadium.
The Pippins (18-10) stormed out of the gates, scoring three runs in the 1st, before adding another run in the 2 nd inning on Alex Guenette's solo home run.
In the top of the 4 th, the Pippins temporarily blew the game open by scoring seven more runs to take an 11-0 lead. The Pippins had every player reach base at least once by the end of the second trip through the order and appeared to be in full control of the game.
However, Bend (18-13) wasted no time responding, as the Elks scored six runs of their own in the bottom of the 4 th to get back within five runs at 11-6. Both starters exited the game before the end of the 4 th inning as the offenses continued to duke it out.
After the two teams exchanged runs in the 5 th, the Pippins got some space in the 6 th. Vince Fernandez hit a two-run home run to right field, his fourth of the season, and Ryan Yamane drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to put the Pippins up 12-7.
After reliever Matt Trask answered with a scoreless bottom of the 6 th, reliever Kelly Fitzpatrick gave up a run in the 7 th and two more in the 8 th to keep Bend close at 15-10, but the Elks got no closer and had their seven-game winning streak snapped in the loss.
The Pippins tied a season high in runs (15) and hits (18) in the win, which extended their winning streak to four games. They will go for a seventh series win in the last nine series Friday night at 6:35 p.m. against the Elks.
