YAKIMA, Wash. - The Pippins had gotten six starts of eight innings over the first 51 games, but Mitch Yada took it to a new level Friday, turning in the first complete game of the season in a 9-2 win over Wenatchee.
In the win, Yada allowed 6 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 0 walks and struck out 6 AppleSox hitters to improve to 4-3 on the season.
Meanwhile, the Yakima Valley bats provided plenty of early support, scoring four runs in the 1 st inning and three more in the 2 nd to take a quick 7-0 lead. Five different players drove in runs over the first two innings for the Pippins (28-24), who ended the night early for Wenatchee (23-29) starter Gage Burland.
The Pippins put up a run in the 6 th and one final run in the 8 th to cap off their largest scoring output in league play since a 12-run performance on July 6 at Walla Walla. Freddy Smith was 3-5 with 2 RBI and Mitch Skaggs was 3-5 with 2 RBI in the victory. For the second straight game, the Pippins registered 15 hits.
With Corvallis idle Friday, the win kept Yakima Valley in playoff contention. The Pippins need a win in game two of the series Saturday at 7:05 pm to remain in contention. All-star Darrion Simons will take the ball for the Pippins, trying to continue the push to the playoffs.
