August 7, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release
Wenatchee, Wa- The Sweets were due for an offensive explosion and they got it in a 9-2 win over the Applesox on Thursday night. The win snapped a seven game losing streak for Walla Walla (22-28), but Wenatchee (23-28) won the series 2-1.
The Sweets jumped on top in the first with an RBI single by Willie MacIver that scored Myles Hager, but that lead would not last long. The Applesox got a two-run home run from Keston Hiura, his second of the series, and that gave the Wenatchee the 2-1 lead.
Walla Walla come come back to tie it on an RBI ground-out in the fourth by Dyllin Mucha, but they took the lead in the sixth.
Jon Hechtner was the first man to reach on a bunt single with one out in the sixth. Juan Gamez then appeared to have grounded out to short but then was called safe at first on a catcher's interference. That brought up Adam Eskil who picked his first RBI and double as a Sweet by slugging a ball past the third baseman down the line to score Hechtner. That made it 3-2 Sweets, but they weren't done.
With runners on second and third, Alex McKenna was hit by a pitch and then Myles Hager hit a two-run single up the middle. Kyle Nixon then put a bunt single down the left side and that loaded the bases for Nick Halamandaris. Halamandaris hit his second home run of the series, this one a grand slam, on a 1-0 pitch that was one of the longest home runs by a Sweet this season.
That made the score 9-2 and it would stay that way for the rest of the game.
The Sweets got a huge start from Micah Gorman as well who went seven solid innings, just giving up three hits and striking out five. He increased his team lead by picking up his fifth win.
The Sweets will come home needing only two wins to take the season series from Kelowna. After taking the season series from Wenatchee and Yakima Valley 5-4, the Sweets look to do the same to their last division rival.
All three games will be 7:05pm at Borleske Stadium.
