X's Topple Wingnuts

Wichita Wingnuts News Release


WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 15-3 to the Sioux City Explorers at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

The X's used a six-run top of the fourth to break the game open in which six consecutive hitters all reached base and scored. Jacob Cruz started the rally with a one-out single down the right field line. Singles from Kent Sakamoto and Ray Serrano loaded the bases. Steve Pearson hit a groundball to second that was thrown into foul territory behind home plate by Cesar Suarez allowing two runs to score. With a 3-1 lead, Derek Schermerhorn and Darrick Hale hit back-to-back RBI singles. Dustin Jones finished off the inning with a two-out, two-run single to center.

After the Wingnuts picked up a run back on an RBI single from Josh Horn, Pearson hit a three-run home run in the top of the fifth to open a 10-2 lead. Horn hit a solo home run down the left field line in the sixth inning.

The X's added two in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch and a double play groundball. Horn crushed a solo home run down the left field line in the bottom half for the Wingnuts' final run. Sioux City tacked on three more in the eighth on two RBI groundouts and an RBI single from Hale.

Sioux City scored the first run of the day when T.J. Bohn cracked a two-out, solo home run in the opening inning off of starter Bubba O'Donnell. Ryan Patterson returned the favor against X's starter David Welch in the bottom half with a deep shot to left-center. Jorge Delgado doubled leading off the home fourth to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.

O'Donnell took the loss, allowing 12 runs, nine earned, in five-plus innings. O'Donnell allowed 12 hits, walked two, and struck out one. Welch allowed three earned runs on nine hits in six innings to pick up the win.
