St. Paul Saints News Release

The St. Paul Saints ended their nine game road losing streak in emphatic fashion as Saints starter Jason Godin gave up one hit through 8.0 innings in a 9-0 two-hit shutout win over the most potent offense in the American Association, the Sioux Falls Pheasants at Sioux Falls Stadium on Thursday night.

Godin was masterful and didn't allow a base runner through the first eight batters.. With two outs in the third Gus Milner hit a high grounder to the mound which Godin reached his glove up, the ball ricocheted off of it and caromed towards second as Milner reached on an infield single. That was the only hit Godin would allow. He threw 114 pitches of shutout baseball while walking five and striking out six. Two spectacular plays by the left side of the Saints infield kept Godin from giving up more than one hit. In the second Brandon Sing hit a smash up the middle, but Steve Mays dove for it and just nipped Sing at first. In the fifth Trevor Lawhorn hit a smash down the third base line which Steve Butler dove to his backhand, snagged it and threw out Lawhorn.

The only other Pheasant hit came in the ninth with Marcus McKenzie on the mound. With one out Brandon Sing hit a slow chopper to short that Mays charged and tried to play on the short hop, but came up empty. It was the fewest hits the Saints have given up this season and the fewest hits recorded by the Pheasants. It was also the first time the Pheasants, who have scored 575 runs nearly, 60 runs more than any other team, had been shutout this season.

The Saints offense got all the runs they needed in the first when Brandon Carter tripled with one out. Ole Sheldon followed with a two-run homer to left, his 20th of the season, to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. Brent Krause followed with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when Josh Burrus reached on a throwing error by shortstop Tim Hutting.

In the second the Saints made it 5-0 when Butler walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Mays and scored on Josh Alley's single. Alley advanced to second on the throw home. Carter followed with a single moving Alley to third and Alley scored on a wild pitch.

With the Saints up 7-0 in the seventh Gerard Haran singled with one out. Butler followed with a single to left, extending his hitting streak to a team season tying high 12. Mays followed with an RBI single and Alley added a sacrifice fly to finish the scoring.

The Saints now head home for a three game series against the Lincoln Saltdogs at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints are TBA and the Saltdogs will send RHP Angel Castro (3-2, 2.81). It is the Minnesota State Fair Preview Show. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
