
X's fall to Shreveport

SIOUX CITY - The Sioux City Explorers fell 13-1 Monday night to the Shreveport Sports at Lewis and Clark Park. The loss drops the X's to 33-33 (9-8 second half), and the win improves the Sports to 34-32 (8-10 second half).
The Sports started off quick with a home run by Neb Brown. Shreveport would add two more solo home runs in the fifth and sixth by Tommy Bryant and Chad Gambill respectively.
The floodgates opened in the seventh for the Sports, scoring six runs. Brown doubled to right and drove in Coby Smith and Austin Easley. Gambill singled to left and scored in Brown. An Al Corbeil double to right-center scored Gambill and Todd Self. The final run of the inning came when Enohel Polanco doubled down the right field line, to score Corbeil.
Sioux City would crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh when Robert Mendoza led off with a solo home run. The Sports would put the game out of reach in the ninth, adding four runs. Nick Corbeil hit a three run home run, which scored Ron Fenwick and Chad Gambill.
Sioux City starter Karsten Gaarder (1-4) took the loss. Gaarder went 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs, walking two and striking out one. Shreveport's Ryan Snyder (4-5) picked up the win, going six innings. Snyder scattered seven hits, struck out three and walked one.
JJ Burress was 3-5 at the plate; Ryan Gripp, Dan Meier, Kevin Henry, Alex Llanos, Robert Mendoza and Mike Richardson each added one hit.
The X's and Sports will play the rubber match of their three game series Tuesday night at Lewis and Clark Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with Billy Keppinger (6-3) taking the mound for Sioux City, and Josh Neitz (2-3) starting for Shreveport.
