Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The Diablos from El Paso were in town Monday night to take on the Pensacola Pelicans. The rain cleared away just in time for the 6:35 start of the first game of a three-game series. The Pelicans battled back after El Paso jumped out to an early big lead. In the game, the teams combined to score 17 runs on 25 hits.
It was tough times for the Pelicans as the Diablos had two big innings early in the game. They brought 10 hitters to the plate in the second inning and brought six in to score. Logan Wood had a two run double and Albenis Machado drove in another two with a single.
The Pelicans tacked one on in the third when Rolo Avila, Carlos Mendoza and Juan Rocha strung together three consecutive hits. Rocha brought Avila around to score, chipping away at the Diablo lead.
The Diablos posted another huge inning in the fifth inning, once again sending 10 batters to the plate and this time scoring five runs. Jorge Alvarez had a double that scored two runs and Ben Rosenthal had a three run homerun that barley found its way over the right field wall.
Pensacola managed another run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to two Diablo errors and two walks. Juan Rocha, who reached on an error, came around to score on a throwing error by the El Paso pitcher after a ball was hit hard at him and he made a poor throw to the plate. The Pelicans had the bases loaded but managed only minimal damage as the Diablos took an 11-2 lead into the sixth.
In the 7th inning, the Pelicans finally broke through making the game much closer thanks to homeruns from Rocha and Jose Yepes. Rocha led off the inning with a single shot to left-center to get the inning started. George Branch and Larry Bethea followed with back-to-back singles allowing for Yepes to hit his first pitch high over the left field party deck, cutting the lead to five.
However, the comeback was not meant to be and the Pelicans fell to the Diablos by a count of 11-6. Tomorrow Todd Androsko will get the start for the Pelicans and David McWatters will take the mound for El Paso.
