X's drop game one of double dip

SIOUX FALLS, SD -- The Sioux City Explorers fell to the Sioux Falls Canaries 9-8, Tuesday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium. The loss drops the X's record to 41-45 (17-21 second half), and the win improves the Canaries to 32-52 (16-21 second half).

The Explorers took an early lead in the first inning. J.J. Burress walked and scored on a single by Jorge Moreno for a 1-0 lead.

The Canaries went ahead in the second inning. Bubba Smith and Chris Hall singled to put two runners on base, and a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. John Schmitz followed with a double to put Sioux Falls in front 2-1.

Sioux City scored four in the third to retake the lead. Alex Llanos walked, Jorge Moreno singled, and Jake Daubert singled to load the bases. Chris Grossman singled to score Llanos and Moreno for a 3-2 Explorers lead. Mike Richardson walked to reload the bases before Robert Mendoza hit a flyball to right field that was dropped by John Schmitz in right field. Schmitz error allowed Daubert to score for a 4-2 lead. Grossman scored on a groundout by Billy Keppinger putting Sioux City ahead, 5-2.

The Canaries got a run back in the third inning. Chad Hermansen doubled and scored on a single by Chris Hall to cut the Explorers lead to 5-3.

The Birds tied the game in the fourth. In his debut, Jake Smith singled for the first professional hit of his career. Angelo Fermin got on base via an error by first baseman Mike Richardson. Anthony Monegan bunted the runners to second and third. Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by Ralph Santana and Fermin scored on a single by Chad Hermansen. The pair of runs evened the score, 5-5.

Sioux Falls took the lead in the fifth. Bubba Smith hit his sixth homer of the season to put the Canaries ahead 6-5. Later in the inning, with runners on first and third, Anthony Monegan singled to score John Schmitz and put the Canries ahead, 7-5.

In the top of the sixth, Alex Llanos and Jorge Moreno singled to put two on for Jake Daubert. Daubert singled to score Llanos and cut into the Canaries lead, 7-6. Chris Grossman followed with a bases clearing double to put the Explorers ahead, 8-7.

The Canaries went ahead to stay in the bottom of the sixth. Ralph Santana walked and stole his 33rd base of the season, three shy of the Canaries single-season record. Chad Hermansen followed with a double to score Santana and tie the game, 8-8. Hermansen advanced to third on Abner Arroyo's groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bubba Smith for the 9-8 win.

Lenny Bays (2-3) got the win for the Birds in relief. J.D. Scholten (5-3) took the loss for the Explorers. Matt Montgomery came in and held the lead in the ninth inning to pick up his eighth save of the season.
