American Association names players of the week

DURHAM, NC-- OF Brian Buchanan of St. Paul and RHP Bryan Heaston of Coastal Bend were chosen by Sportsticker, the American Association's official statistician, as Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 7-August 13.

This is the second time this season that Buchanan has been chosen as a Player of the Week (July 17-23). Buchanan, in six games played this past week, hit .381 with four home runs, 10 RBI, 10 runs scored and a slugging percentage of .952. Currently, the Fort Myers, FL resident is batting .278 with 10 home runs, 41 RBI, and 28 runs scored.

Buchanan, 33, was drafted in the first round by the New York Yankees in the 1994 draft. He spent four seasons in the Yankees organization, five with the Minnesota Twins where he reached the major league level in 2000, and over two seasons with the San Diego Padres. Last season with Colorado Springs and Rochester, Buchanan hit .307 with 14 home runs and 57 RBIs.

Heaston, 26, had a great outing this past Wednesday in a 2-0 victory over the Pensacola Pelicans. The Farmington, NM resident tossed a complete game allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out nine batters. For the season, Heaston has a record of 6-3 with a 4.38 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 76 innings pitched.

Heaston was signed by Richmond of the Frontier League in June of 2002. In his five-year professional career, he has spent playing time with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Seattle Mariners organization and the Edinburg Roadrunners. For the Roadrunners last season, he notched a record of 3-1 with a 3.70 ERA in 65 2/3 innings pitched.
