X's drop game four to 'Snakes

SIOUX CITY - The Sioux City Explorers dropped game four of their four game series, 4-0, to the St. Joe Blacksnakes Sunday night at Lewis and Clark Park. The loss drops the X's to 28-27, and the win pushes St. Joe to 31-24 on the season. The win puts the âSnakes in first place in the American Association North Division.
St. Joe got on the board in the second inning, when Cody Nowlin reached on a fielder's choice, and scored on a Denver Kitch single to right. The X's struggled to put the ball in play and were not able to rally.
The âSnakes would put the game away scoring three times in the top of the ninth. Kitch would lead off with a single to second base, and score on a Ben Thomas single down the left field line. Next up was Jake Whitesides, who hit a home run over the right-center wall to put St. Joe up 4-0. The home run was the first given up by the X's Tom Lipari all season. JJ Burress singled in the ninth to extend his hitting streak to seven games, but the X's failed to score a run.
Tom Lipari (6-3) started for Sioux City and took the loss. Lipari pitched a complete game, scattering 12 hits, allowing four runs, walking two and striking out five. Donovan Graves took the mound for St. Joe, going seven innings, giving up five hits, no runs and walking one for his sixth win of the year. Jamie Tricoglou pitched the final two innings for the âSnakes to pick up his eighth save of the season, allowing one hit and striking out one.
The X's will travel to Lincoln, to start a four game series with the Lincoln Saltdogs Monday night. Karsten Gaarder (1-2) will take the mound for Sioux City and Lindsay Gulin (7-1) will start for Lincoln. The X's return to Lewis and Clark Park on Thursday, July 20th, when the Saltdogs come to town, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.xsbaseball.com, via the phone at 277-WINS, or at the box office at Lewis and Clark Park.
