Xplosion Signs Two Players, Including Former Schenley High School Guard Jason Benson

Pittsburgh, Nov. 29, 2005 -- The Pittsburgh Xplosion, the city's new ABA basketball team, today announced the signings of two players: Guard Jason Benson, a Schenley High School graduate and the leading scorer last year for Mansfield University, where he averaged 18.4 points per game and set a single-game school record with 53 points against West Virginia State; and Janerio Spurlock, a forward from Kansas State.

The Xplosion face the Detroit Wheels Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Mellon Arena, 7 p.m., in a game that will benefit the Salvation Army.

Biographical information on each new player is listed below:

Jason Benson

HEIGHT: 6' 3"

WEIGHT: 185

POSITION: GUARD

Jason averaged 18.4 points and 6.1 rebounds as a senior last season to lead the Mansfield University Mounties of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, an NCAA Division II program. His outstanding play earned him "Athlete of the Year" honors at Mansfield University for 2004-2005. Jason also was named to the PSAC East First Team. Jason scored 53 points in a game against West Virginia State last season to set a Mansfield University single-game scoring record. Earlier, Jason played for Bloomsburg University, where he averaged 15.9 points per game, and for Penn State - New Kensington. In high school, Jason was a guard for Schenley High School in Pittsburgh, where he currently resides. In his senior year at Schenley, the team was 26-0 before falling to Peabody in the City title game.

Janerio Spurlock

HEIGHT: 6' 6"

WEIGHT: 210

POSITION: FORWARD

Janerio played forward for the Kansas State Wildcats of the Big 12 Conference after transferring from Chipola Junior College in Marianna, Florida. At Chipola, he was the team's leading scorer with a 20-point per game average, and the second-leading scorer in the Panhandle Conference. As a high school phenom at Aiken High School, Janerio was named Greater Cincinnati Player of the Year two years in a row and Southwest Ohio Player of the Year. He averaged 20 points per game for Aiken. Janerio is from the Cincinnati area.
