Pittsburgh Xplosion News Release
PITTSBURGH, February 11, 2008 - The Pittsburgh Xplosion today announced the signing of Dajuan Tate. Tate played for the Xplosion last season, averaging 13.3ppg in 26 games, but he became a superstar in China over the winter.
Tate finished fourth in the Chinese Basketball Association in scoring at 26.3ppg for the Jilin Northeast Tigers. He became nationally known in December when he scored 68 points in a game and had a chance to break Chinese legend Sun Jun's CBA record for points in a game, but he relented.
"It's an act that will forever be remembered," Tom Newell, Tate's coach, told the Seattle Times. "From that point on, even if we were at another arena, every time Dajuan scored, they'd cheer for him."
Prior to playing in the CBA that produced Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian, Tate played for the Xplosion in the Continental Basketball Association during the second half of last season. Over the summer, he finished second in the IBL in scoring at 35.6ppg with the Las Vegas Stars.
Tate played college basketball at Mountain State in Beckley, West Virginia. He averaged 12.6 points and 5.3 rebounds in two seasons, leading the team to a 29-3 record and an appearance in the NAIA Sweet 16 as a senior Tate earned Second Team NAIA All-America honors as a junior.
Tate will be in uniform tonight when the Xplosion host East Kentucky at the Petersen Events Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 PM. For more information, visit www.pittsburghxplosion.com.
