Miners run out of time, fall to SkyRockets

PIKEVILLE, KY. - Host East Kentucky couldn't make the most of halftime and third quarter leads Sunday at the Expo Center. The Miners, hosting American Conference frontrunner Minot, encountered offensive hardships in the fourth quarter. Minot outscored the Miners 28-19 in the fourth quarter, defeating East Kentucky 106-104.

The setback was East Kentucky's second straight loss.

Minot won the quarter points 5.5-1.5. The SkyRockets improved to 28-9 after defeating the Miners.

Ronnie Fields, held scoreless in the second and third quarters, led Minot with a team-high 27 points. Fields also dished off five assists for the SkyRockets. Marshall Phillips scored 18 points and Lee Scruggs tossed in 15 for visiting Minot.

Sidney Holmes turned in a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds for the conference-leading SkyRockets.

Minot took a slim 31-30 lead out of the first quarter. East Kentucky, which played without injured guards Bryant Northern (hand) and Mike Crain (ankle), fought back to lead 59-52 at the intermission.

Jason McLeish led East Kentucky with a near triple-double of 28 points, 10 assists and eight assists. Josh Pace followed with 22 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Miners.

Mike Dean scored 21 points for the host team in the American Conference matchup. Boo Jackson turned in the game's only other double-double for the Miners, scoring 15 points and hauling in 11 rebounds.

The Miners owned an 85-78 lead at the end of the third quarter.

East Kentucky, following the loss, fell to 18-19. The Miners will be back in action Monday on the road versus the Pittsburgh Xplosion at the Petersen Events Center. Tip-off for the East Kentucky-Pittsburgh matchup is set for 7:05 p.m.
