Pittsburgh Xplosion News Release

PITTSBURGH, February 11, 2008 - In the first five games this season between the Pittsburgh Xplosion and East Kentucky Miners, the home team was undefeated. That streak was broken Monday night at the Petersen Events Center with East Kentucky's 131-117 win over the Pittsburgh Xplosion.

The game remained tight until the newly-acquired Steve Thomas scored nine consecutive points for the Miners in a 1:50 span midway through the fourth period. Although the end of his personal run only gave East Kentucky a 102-99 lead, it started a 20-5 run. It gave the Miners their largest lead at 118-103. Thomas, in just his second game with the Miners, finished with a game-high 34 points and 17 rebounds.

The Xplosion were paced by Tyrone Anderson, who finished with a triple-double of 26 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists. Former Pitt Panther John DeGroat scored 24 points, while Dajuan Tate added 12 points and seven rebounds in his first game with Pittsburgh.

The Miners took control early and opened a 38-27 lead early in the second period. East Kentucky did not use a substitution until the 6:55 mark of the second quarter. When head coach Kevin Keathley opened his bench, the Miners led, 49-40. In less than six minutes, the Xplosion had built a 62-55 lead on a John DeGroat jumper. DeGroat led the Xplosion with 13 points in the first half. The Xplosion run at the end of the period allowed Pittsburgh to win the second quarter point.

That would be the only quarter Pittsburgh would win, with East Kentucky taking the other six. Pittsburgh is off until Friday when Albany comes to town. For ticket information, visit www.pittsburghxplosion.com.
