Memphis Xplorers News Release
SOUTHAVEN --- The Memphis Xplorers will try for a split of their two-game season series with the South Georgia Wildcats at the DeSoto Civic Center this Saturday night at 7:05. The Xplorers are 8-3 after falling 43-42 to Birmingham on a last second field goal. The Wildcats, coming off a 52-50 loss to the Green Bay Blizzard, are 1-10 with that lone victory occurring in Week 7 versus the Xplorers, 48-41, in Albany, GA.
The Xplorers' loss to the Steeldogs last week was the team's first home loss since July 9 of last season; a streak of nine games. While the team will be trying to rebound from the loss, it will also be attempting to move on without one of its veteran leaders who could be lost for the season. WR/DB Terrell Adams suffered a knee injury in last Saturday's game and was placed on the Long Term IR on Wednesday.
Adams, in his third season with the Xplorers, will be replaced on the roster by WR/DB Sidney Haugabrook. Haugabrook was assigned to the Xplorers on Thursday.
The 5-foot-10, 188 pound Atlanta native played his college ball at Delaware. Haugabrook was named to four different All-American teams following his senior season and was as an All-Atlantic 10 Conference pick in each of his four seasons with the Blue Hens. He was signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2005 and ended up playing in the CFL with the Hamilton Tigercats in 2005.
Haugabrook will join OL/DL Alex Bell, who was assigned on Wednesday, as new faces on the field for the Xplorers this week.
Despite the loss last week, the Xplorers had a bit of history occur. DS Deon Giddens broke the franchise record for tackles in a season. His 12 total tackles in the game gave him 80 for the season, surpassing the 75 tackles by Kevin Cobb in the 2003 season. Giddens' total is currently second in the league behind Oklahoma City's Oliver Fletcher's 80.5 tackles.
All-time, the Xplorers are still looking for their first win over the South Georgia/Cape Fear franchise. The Wildcats have won all three meetings. The first two were when the team was based in Fayetteville, NC and the third being the game earlier this season.
After this week's game, the Xplorers play three of their final four on the road, starting next Friday at Macon.
