Week 13 af2 Friday night matchup
June 22, 2006 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
LOUISVILLE FIRE (6-5) AT MANCHESTER WOLVES (5-6) FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 2006 - Verizon Wireless Arena (9,650) 7:30 P.M. ET The Louisville Fire will look to ride the hot hand of QB BRETT DIETZ as they roll into Manchester to square off with the Wolves at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Dietz threw for an Arena Football record 12 touchdown passes last week in an 86-66 victory over Albany, and finished the day 23-of-31 for 314 yards. Dietz is now tied for the league lead in TD passes with 71. He also leads the league with a 71.5 completion percentage. Assisting Dietz in his record-setting day last Saturday was OS ROB MAGER; catching 11 balls for 168 yards and six touchdowns. Mager's performance enabled him to overtake Manchester OS STEVE GONZALEZ in a number of receiving categories, and now leads the af2 in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. WR/DB LANCE TAYLOR was no slouch for the Fire as he accumulated 79 yards receiving and three touchdowns, as well as one on the ground. Louisville currently ranks third in the league in scoring offense at 56.6 ppg. DS JEREMY CHANDLER led the defense in the win, accounting for 6.5 tackles and two interceptions. The defense for the Fire has struggled at times, leading to their bottom ranking in total defense at 301.3 ypg. The Wolves bounced back last week after two consecutive losses to beat Tulsa on the road, 59-24. QB D. BRYANT threw seven TDs to three different receivers in the win, upping his season total to 54. Gonzalez caught six passes for 91 yards and four touchdowns. His receiving mates, WR/LB MARC BACOTE and WR/DB WENDELL WILLIAMS combined for 13 receptions, 151 yards and three scores. The Wolves are currently 3rd in the league in total offense. While the offense looked explosive, it was the job of the defense that recorded the win. Although they only tallied one sack, the Wolves constantly pressured Tulsa. As a result, the secondary was able to make more plays. Leading the attack was DS WILLIAM HAITH, who finished with 6.5 tackles and four pass break ups. DS ALLISTAIR SEBASTIEN was also a force with 5.5 total tackles and one interception. In the two teams' previous meeting this season, neither club could find an offensive rhythm, and the two star offensive specialists (Mager & Gonzalez) were held to a combined nine receptions for 122 yards and one score. Sebastien had two interceptions and four pass break ups for the Wolves as the Wolves won by five on the road. Chandler totaled eight tackles, one fumble recovery and one interception. This meeting should be higher scoring than the first, but the Wolves will try to keep the ball out of Dietz's hands with a more ball-controlled offense.
