Wynder on the World Cup Radar with Latest U.S. U-20 Call-Up
March 17, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release
Louisville City FC defender Josh Wynder could punch his ticket to the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup thanks to a call-up to the United States' upcoming camp.
Wynder, who trained with the U-20s for the first time earlier this year, was announced Friday as part of a squad that will travel to Marbella, Spain, for friendlies against France (11 a.m. Wednesday), England (11 a.m. March 25) and Serbia (9 a.m. March 28).
The U.S. U-20s are preparing for the World Cup kicking off May 20 in Indonesia. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 2003, are age-eligible - among them Wynder, a LouCity Academy graduate turning 18 this spring. Former LouCity defender Jonathan Gomez, now with Spain's Real Sociedad, is also among the 19 players selected for this camp by coach Mikey Varas.
A center back from Louisville, Wynder is coming off a breakout 2022 that led to nominations for both U.S. Soccer's Young Male Player of the Year and USL Championship Young Player of the Year.
Wynder received his first international call-ups at the U-19 level, where he captained the team in a June 6 victory over England and assisted a goal in a Sept. 23 win against Croatia. He then earned a shot with the U-20s in January for their domestic training camp.
Paired with his stellar club performances, Wynder has seen his Transfermarkt value jump to a USL Championship-leading € million. Upon turning 18, Wynder will become eligible for the European transfer he's aspiring to when the summer window opens.
