SD Loyal played its first match of the 2023 season last week, earning three points with a 1-0 win against visiting Detroit City FC in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. Head Coach Miller's team will try to earn another three more points Sunday at Torero Stadium, but this time it will be against a very familiar rival in Phoenix Rising FC. Since SD Loyal came into the league in 2020, the Western Conference rivalry has seen several intense matches. The clubs have met eight times with Phoenix leading the all-time series 4W-3L-1D. The last time they faced each other, SD Loyal clinched a playoff berth with a 3-0 win in September. But this time around, SD Loyal comes in with a different head coach that has 15-returning players from 2022 and the addition of key players such as midfielder Joe Corona and striker Ronaldo Damus, who signed with the club earlier this week. Phoenix is coming off a disappointing 2022 campaign in which it finished 10th in the Western Conference with a 12W-16L-6D record and 42 points. A franchise that is used to being in the postseason, Phoenix hopes to bounce back with a renovated roster that includes the addition of striker Danny Trejo from Las Vegas Lights after losing Aodhan Quinn. Phoenix, who is coached by Juan Guerra and has a key returner in Kecon Lambert, is coming off a 1-1 draw against Charleston Battery in its season opener last week on the road.
