THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia's series finale at Lexington was postponed due to unplayable grounds. The Power and Legends will make up the game on April 23 at Appalachian Power Park as part of a doubleheader. On Saturday, West Virginia staved of Lexington 8-6. The Power tallied three runs in the third, including two on an error, and added five in the sixth. The Legends scored once in the fourth, added a run in the eighth and plated four more on a grand slam in the ninth. Austin Coley pitched five innings for his second win of the season. Nick Neumann recorded the final three outs for his second save. Eight of the nine Power batters scored a run each.
RUBBING IS RACING: West Virginia holds a one win lead over the Kannapolis Intimidators in the all-time series at 54 wins to 53 losses. After beating the Intimidators ten times over ten games in 2013, the 2014 edition of the Power lost the season set 8-6. Since 2005, West Virginia is 29-25 at CMC-NorthEast Stadium (formerly Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium). 12 of the two teams 15 meetings this season will be played in North Carolina.
SCHEDULE REVAMPED: The suspended game against Hagerstown on April 15 will be resumed on April 28; the first day of West Virginia's next road trip. The Power and Suns will resume play in the bottom of the second inning with the Suns up 1-0. Since the game was part of a doubleheader on Wednesday, it will be played out to seven innings with a seven inning game to follow.
TOP TEN: A win against Kannapolis this evening would help West Virginia match its best-ever ten game start to any one season in Power franchise history. Over the previous ten seasons, only the 2007 club had a winning record after ten games at 7-3. That 2007 team went on to win 17 of 21 games during the first month of the season.
HEAVY WORKLOAD: West Virginia's bullpen has worked 45 of the team's 79 innings pitched this season. During the first nine games, the bullpen has a combined ERA of 3.60, compared to a 4.97 ERA by the starters over 34 frames.
ALUMNI UPDATE: Former Power pitcher Phil Irwin is playing overseas in the Korean Baseball Organization this season. The right-hander pitched for West Virginia during the 2010 season and is now playing for the KT Wiz.
BEST BACKSTOP: Taylor Gushue leads all South Atlantic League catchers in fielding percentage. In eight games, Gushue has not committed an error in 78 total chances. Gushue is throwing would-be basestealers out at a 28 percent clip, which is eighth best in the league.
STILL STREAKING: Chase Simpson's hitting streak was stopped at five with an 0-3 performance Friday night. The infielder matched Tito Polo's streak at five for the longest by a Power player this season. Simpson's walked in the second Friday and went 2-5 Saturday to extend his on base streak to nine straight, tied with five others for the longest in the league this season,
POWER PROMO UPDATE- APRIL 25: The West Virginia Power will honor the 1990 Charleston Wheelers, the only team to bring a South Atlantic League title to Charleston. The entire team will be inducted onto the Charleston Baseball Wall of Fame and the first 1,000 fans will receive a commemorative t-shirt celebrating the 25th anniversary of the championship.
POWER POINTS: Nick Neumann and today's starter, John Sever, have not allowed an earned run yet this season... West Virginia is 5-0 when scoring first this season, joining three other teams that are undefeated when scoring first...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh completed a three-game series sweep of Milwaukee with a 5-2 Sunday victory. Gerrit Cole struck out six over six innings... Indianapolis's game at Louisville was postponed... Altoona blanked Akron 7-0 with a combined shutout by Zack Dodson, Tom Harlan and Colin Balester...
