Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds fell in Monday's series opener at Hagestown by a final score of 5-1. The Shorebirds committed four errors, surrendering five unearned runs in the defeat. Delmarva has now lost five in a row, falling under .500 for the first time this season.
Hagerstown took advantage of several Shorebirds mistakes to build a comfortable margin. In the first inning, Grant DeBruin rolled a two-out grounder towards shortstop, but Jared Breen's throw sailed off target. As DeBruin reached, Alec Keller scored all the way from second base for a 1-0 lead. Shorebirds' starter Bennett Parry prevented more damage by stranding the bases loaded later in the frame.
In the second inning, the Suns used another error to manufacture a run. After a leadoff walk, Osvaldo Abreu bounced a grounder to Riley Palmer, who had the ball slip on the transfer out of his glove. Hagerstown tacked on a run with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
Three more unearned runs came across in the fourth inning. With runners on second and third, Delmarva brought the infield in to cut down the lead runner. Keller smashed a grounder to shortstop, which kicked into Breen's chest. Another sacrifice fly by Austin Davidson and an RBI double by Dale Carey made it a 5-0 Suns' advantage.
The Shorebirds' offense went dormant until the ninth inning. On several earlier occassions, Delmarva threatened with a leadoff single only to have every burgeoning rally cut down. Alex Murphy belted a triple to start the ninth, the Shorebirds' only extra base hit of the night. Murphy subsequently scored on an RBI grounder by Conor Bierfeldt after a diving stop by Davidson at third base took away a potential hit.
Parry settled for a loss despite all five runs on his line being unearned. Austen Williams shined for Hagerstown with six shutout innings, building off 5 2/3 scoreless in his previous start. Williams improved to 2-1 while R.C. Orlan earned a nine-out save, his second of the year.
The Shorebirds and Suns continue the series with game two on Tuesday evening. Two southpaws square off, Brian Gonzalez (1-0, 2.70) for Delmarva and Connor Bach (0-0, 5.00) for Hagerstown. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm at Municipal Stadium.
