Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning without the benefit of a hit to steal a 6-5 win from the Rome Braves Monday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. With the win in the opening game of the three-game series, the Gnats (4-6) passed the Braves (3-6) for sixth place in the SAL Southern division.
Trailing 5-4 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, SS Luis Guillorme and CF John Mora each drew walks against reliever Carlos Salazar. Right fielder Wuilmer Becerra dropped a successful sacrifice bunt down the third base line to move the tying run to third and the go-ahead run to second with one out in the inning. The Braves brought in reliever Kyle Kinman to face DH Jon Leroux. Kingman bounced a wild pitch that allowed Guillorme to score to tie the game and Mora to move up to third. Then, against a drawn-in infield, Leroux brought home Mora with a smash to shortstop.
The Braves took a 5-4 lead with a run in the sixth against reliever Carlos Valdez on an RBI drag bunt by CF Keith Curcio.
Earlier, the Gnats had taken a 4-2 advantage with a four-run bottom of the third. Mora brought home the team's first run with an RBI single to right. After a second run scored on a wild pitch, Leroux put the Gnats in front with a booming two run double to the right-center field gap.
The Braves, helped by a pair of Guillorme throwing errors, scored first in the game with a pair of runs against starter RHP Martires Arias in the third inning.
The Sand Gnats and Braves will continue their three-game series tomorrow at 7:05 PM. RHP Scarlyn Reyes (0-1, 4.50) will take the hill for the Gnats, while RHP Chad Sobotka (0-1, 11.25) will make his second start for Rome. It will be the first Two-for-Tuesday of the season and gates will open at 6:00 PM.
